  "DETOUR" (1945)

Synopsis: Neal is hitchhiking to Los Angeles to join his fiancee. He is picked up by MacDonald, who tells him of a female hitchhiker he had picked up earlier and who had scratched him when he tried to make advances toward her. later Neal drives while MacDonald sleeps. When it starts to rain , he tries to waken MacDonald, but he finds him dead. Neal panics and dumps his body in the desert, after stealing his wallet. Later, he stops to pick up hitchhiker Savage, who turns out to be the same woman MacDonald had told him about. She does not believe his story and threatens to turn him in unless he does what she says. Possibly the bleakest and most nihilistic film noir, this is a super low-budget effort shot in just six days and mostly in two locations, the hotel and the car in front of a rear projection screen. Today it enjoys an outstanding critical reputation for it's depiction of a man in the grip of forces beyond his control. Savage is remembered as one of the most despicable vixens in the history of cinema and the scene where she is bstrangled is the highlight of the film. A very significant, fine motion picture.
