"PIRATES OF CAPRI" (1949)

Synopsis: An enjoyable, swashbuckling romp directed by Ulmer who knew how to do much with the little the studio gave him to work with. Hayward stars in this, SCARLET PIMPERNEL-like tale as a prim and unassuming character in the Naples court who has a secret identity, and ventures out as a heroic swordsman in defence of a group of rebels seeking to overthrow queen Barnes and her evil police chief Curtis. Great action scenes and clever direction by Ulmer pull this one out of the doldrums. Several scenes that are direct references to the classical theatre could easily be viewed as a bit a playfulness on the part of Ulmer, who has his original training in the theatre of Germany before turning to film.
